Details: The concept of the border, in its ambivalence of simultaneous separation and connection, was at the center of the 2014 annual conference for comic research. This is because comics are also a medium that in many respects sets, tests, and crosses boundaries, not just those between high and popular culture. In formal terms, it blurs the distinctions between text and image, media and arts, and breaks with stylistic conventions. Content-wise, comics increasingly rely on their subversive potential to address social and psychological border areas: More and more works deal with class, race, and gender, as well as fragile self-images. Even less abstract geographical boundaries are concretely overcome by comics: They are marketed globally, influence cultural spheres beyond their own national borders, and are produced through international division of labor. The present interdisciplinary volume illuminates versions of borders and border crossings in and through comics from various perspectives and using a wide variety of examples.
