Details: Short description Their inner concept is that of an ordered world, their activity its possible representation in measured numbers. For both the melancholic Pynchon and the audacious Miller, these abstract numbers represent the coherence of their very personal existence, allowing them a kind of anchoring in the concrete: for Pynchon, who cannot get over the death of his beloved wife, for Miller, who continually loses himself in sexual excesses and their emotional insignificance. Together, they initially undertake the task of drawing a demarcation line, which they interrupt for a larger one: the measurement of the transit of Venus, by means of which the distance from the Earth to the Sun is to be calculated. But with the magnitude of the task, both their personal hopelessness seems to grow, and the more precisely the distances are defined, the more narrowly and insurmountably they draw their own boundaries. With literary means and in a strikingly reduced drawing style, Leopold Maurer takes us in equally touching and comical scenes into the not exclusively rationally comprehensible world of the two protagonists, which is populated not only by numbers but also by trigger-happy twin brothers and strange saints, by werewolves and poetically inclined sewer crocodiles.
