It's almost unbelievable how the Italian painter Andrea Grosso Ciponte, whose works have also been shown at the Biennale, has transformed Heinrich von Kleist's highly complex, psychological narrative "The Marquise of O...." into a graphic novel. Ciponte dares the provocative and artistic leap to reduced visualization. He concentrates entirely on the figure of the Marquise and paints her exclusively naked, apart from the few scenes in which she is subjected to violence. Dacia Palmerino's text version is equally a tour de force of allusive brevity; it follows a plot thread, detached from Kleist's linguistic fabric, durable enough to link and support Ciponte's magnificent visual ideas. The acts of the Marquise, rendered with watercolor technique to create a certain distance, simultaneously convey something central of Kleist's feelings through their staging and gestures, combined with a contemporary understanding of society. This has resulted in something unique and fascinatingly new.
