Details: King Aroo is an almost forgotten treasure among American newspaper comics. Drawn and written by Jack Kent, this unusual strip ran for a decade and a half, from 1950 to 1965. King Aroo made young and old alike smile, grin and laugh with an imaginative mix of clever and witty wordplay, visual humor, and good old slapstick. The tiny kingdom of Myopia is ruled by the friendly King Aroo, supported by his faithful (though sometimes recalcitrant) henchman Yupyop. His subjects also include Mr. Pennipost, a kangaroo postman (with a "natural" mail pouch), the forgetful Mr. Elephant, the wise Professor Yorgel, and an unpredictable sorceress, Wanda the Witch. Kent's light and flowing drawing style fits perfectly with the loose and cheeky mischievous stories. The episodes are packed with engaging characters, witty and quick-witted dialogues, and stories that develop over weeks. Volume I celebrates the strip's 60th birthday by presenting every strip published from 1950 to the end of 1952, printed from the original drawings and numerous proofs. The editor is Eisner Award winner Dean Mullaney. The volume is supplemented by a biographical essay by Bruce Canwell and an introduction by Sergio Aragones.
