Details: Short description Dudenbrooks: a literary alphabet for graphic novel aesthetes "For twenty-six episodes, short moments of destiny are told to us under the main title Dudenbrooks—a neologism formed from the Duden and the Buddenbrooks, which certainly makes the claim that here, in a small form, great stories are told." Andreas Platthaus, FAZ Berlin writer Jochen Schmidt has taken seven words from a common Duden for each letter of the alphabet, spaced forty entries apart. For each of the twenty-six alphabetical word groups, he then chooses a first name beginning with the same letter, which is the name of the protagonist, and forms a cycle of tiny narratives from it. And then Line Hoven comes into play. From scratchboard, in which she exposes white under black, she scratches an illustration that has the appearance of a carefully crafted woodcut. In doing so, she ensures a continuation of the story's content. Because suddenly, Schmidt's protagonists have a face, a demeanor, a personality. And so the concept of the picture story reaches a new dimension—it becomes a graphic novel. The Dudenbrooks series was printed weekly in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung from January to June 2011. Press reviews A virtually ideally successful interplay of word and image, as is extremely rare. (Süddeutsche Zeitung) That this work will undoubtedly make literary and linguistic history can already be seen by the connoisseur in the title: "Dudenbrooks". The most famous German dictionary unites with the novel of a Nobel laureate. (Bücher - Das WDR 5-Literaturmagazin) A linguistically playful homage to every letter, each told as an amusing genre scene. And beautifully illustrated by Line Hoven.
